The Exhibitions

From September 20, 2025, to January 11, 2026, Palazzo Reale in Milan hosts Leonora Carrington, the first Italian monographic retrospective dedicated to the Anglo-Mexican artist. Curated by Tere Arcq and Carlos Martín , the exhibition brings together more than 60 works from international collections and museums, part of the Milano Cortina 2026 Cultural Olympiad .

The exhibition recounts Carrington’s journey through universal themes that anticipated reflections that are central today: ecology, feminism, resilience, and imagination . Among the most significant sections are Leonora’s Grand Tour , which explores the early years of her rebellious career; La Mariée two Vent , dedicated to the surrealist period between France and the United States; Disorientation and Bilocation , which addresses the sense of exile and creative rebirth in Mexico; and La Cucina Alchemica , in which everyday life becomes a place of transformation and feminine magic.

The exhibition is enriched by photographic materials, writings, and testimonies that show the lesser-known side of the artist, revealing his ability to transform myths, memories, and visions into works of extraordinary intensity.

Bio

Leonora Carrington (Clayton Green, 1917 – Mexico City, 2011) is one of the most original figures of Surrealism. Raised in a conservative environment in England, she chose the path of rebellion and art from a young age, finding in Surrealism a language to explore her inner world.

After his European years, marked by his encounter with Max Ernst and the avant-garde, he experienced a difficult period during the war, but found his creative and spiritual rebirth in Mexico. There he developed an intense production of painting, writing, and sculpture, characterized by fairy-tale imagery, hybrid creatures, alchemical and symbolic references.

Her work intertwines art, myth, feminism, and ecology , anticipating issues that are timely and urgent today. Also known as a writer, Carrington has left a legacy that transcends disciplinary boundaries, transforming imagination into a political and visionary act.
