The exhibition
The Musée Maillol features the largest and most comprehensive retrospective exhibition devoted to Steve McCurry, one of the most famous American photographers of all time. The World of Steve McCurry exhibition is curated by Biba Giacchetti and organised in collaboration with the Tempora agency. It features the reporter’s iconic photographs, as well as some of his unpublished work. His striking photographs for their humanity, dignity, compassion, and elegance, portray his journey from Afghanistan to South-East Asia, from Africa to Latin America. The exhibition design by Peter Bottazzi introduces visitors to a maze of images without any specific chronological or thematic order, encouraging them to get immersed into McCurry’s world and explore it through the photographer’s eyes.
Biography of the Artist
Steve McCurry graduated from Pennsylvania University in 1974 with a degree in Film and Theatre.
He began freelancing in the late 1970s, reporting around the world from India and Afghanistan.
The breakthrough in his career came in 1979, when he entered the Mujahideen-controlled region in Afghanistan just before the Russian invasion. On his way back, in order to cross the border, he hid the photo film rolls sewn to his clothes. His colour images have been published in numerous magazines around the world. However, Steve McCurry’s name remains particularly linked to the National Geographic, for which he produced the most famous cover of all time.
