APPIANI

23 Set 2025 – 11 Gen 2026

Palazzo Reale pays tribute to Andrea Appiani, a leading figure of the Neoclassical period in Milan. Through an extensive and carefully structured exhibition, the show aims to present the complete profile of an artist who was able to interpret with elegance and formal rigor the cultural, political, and spiritual demands of his time, making a decisive contribution to shaping the visual identity of Milan at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The exhibition

The show retraces the artistic and intellectual journey of Andrea Appiani (1754–1817), the first painter of the Kingdom of Italy, celebrated by his contemporaries as the “painter of the Graces.” Through a structured itinerary divided into nine sections, visitors will admire frescoes, portraits, drawings, sketches, and works of art that highlight Appiani’s versatility: from religious and aristocratic commissions to the great celebratory cycles of the Napoleonic era. The initiative is part of the Cultural Olympiad of Milan Cortina 2026. The exhibition also benefits from the collaboration of major Italian and European institutions, including the Louvre, the Musée Carnavalet, the Pinacoteca di Brera, Villa Carlotta, and the European Federation of Napoleonic Cities.
