Descrition
The exhibition Edipo. Lo sguardo in sè, being held in Syracuse at the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Bellomo, until 6 November 2022, features the works by 26 artists about Oedipus. This paradigmatic character embraces the whole history of Western culture, from antiquity up to 20th century interpretations, passing through the great readings by Schelling, Hegel, Nietzsche and Freud, and still today an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
Contemporary authors belonging to different generations and languages, who have dealt with this articulated and highly enigmatic subject, are the protagonists of this exhibition.
Along with artists of international renown (Arnaldo Pomodoro, Mimmo Paladino, Emilio Isgrò, Alfredo Pirri, Gianfranco Notargiacomo, Vettor Pisani), there are also several emerging artists (Silvia Giambrone, Stefano Ricci, Nicola Toce, Brando Cesarini), some local artists (Giovanni Migliara, Stefania Pennacchio, Andrea Chisesi and Alfredo Romano), or artists born in Syracuse, but currently working elsewhere (Michele Ciacciofera, Paolo Scirpa, Giuseppe Pulvirenti), either already established, or still little known here in Italy, such as the Cypriot Vassilis Vassiliades. Also Matteo Basilè, Umberto Passeretti, Corrado Bonicatti and Hermann Nitsch – the four artists involved in the Greek Theater’s communication campaigns organized by the INDA Foundation in the last three seasons – are among the featured artists.

This fascinating exhibition is set in the various rooms of the Museum, engaging in an unprecedented dialogue with the paintings and sculptures of the permanent collection, which, among many others, features masterpieces like The Annunciation by Antonello da Messina, highlighting any similarities and contrasts.
The exhibition is further enhanced by two costumes: one by fashion designer Antonio Marras, a fabric sculpture proper, designed for the recent Oedipus the King – A Black Tale, staged at the Elfo Puccini Theater in Milan, and another one created by Daniela Dal Cin for Oedipus the King produced by the Turin-based company Marcido Marcidorjs and Famosa Mimosa.
Promoted and organized by the Galleria di Palazzo Bellomo with the support of the Assessorato dei Beni Culturali e dell’Identità della Regione Siciliana, in collaboration with the Municipality of Syracuse, Fondazione INDA and Civita Sicilia, the exhibition is curated by Antonio Calbi, Superintendent of the National Institute of Ancient Drama, with scientific consulting from Ornella Fazzina and Michele Romano.
